I missed a couple days of writing on this so I will fill everyone in this week. The second day of walking around with Andrew consisted of meeting by the Tower of London, and then walking along the route of the Roman Wall all the way to the Museum of London. There we spent a long time looking through the exhibits and answering questions about it. We left just as the museum was closing for the night, took the tube back to Earl's Court and made tacos for dinner with the group of us that live on the same floor. It was a fun night, just telling stories and eating good food. Moving on to yesterday, I had class at 11 with Natania, our English and theatre professor. She is very nice and seems easy to talk to. We will be writing journals every day and then turning those into a weekly essay about our observations or thoughts of the city or anything else about our experience. There are presentations in partners of the different plays we will be either reading or going to see, which might be difficult, but I'll figure it out when it comes time.
After class, I ate lunch in my room before heading to Charing Cross to spend the day looking around before we meeting the class at The Duchess Theatre for the play The Pitmen Painters. I had a lot of fun yesterday, we went to Trafalgar Square and bought some souvenirs, went to Covent Garden and saw a lot of really cute shops, and then had dinner by the theatre at this wonderful small Italian restaurant. The play we saw was also quite good, it was about pitmen in the 1930's who began taking an art class with some guys in their union. At first they did not understand the point, but eventually were inspired by the paintings they created. It was a humorous and interesting play. And when we left, a group of us saw one of the actors and talked to him for a minute. He asked where we were from and how long we'd be in London, it was cool.
Today was much more laid back than the last two days, but I think that was needed. Everyone kind of branched off in smaller groups and decided what their activity for the day would be. Jenna, Rachel, Charlotte, Kelsey and I began by heading to King's Cross train station to see Platform 9 3/4, haha. It wasn't quite like I expected it to be, there was construction going on that ruined the magic a bit, but we got funny pictures and can now say we went. After that Charlotte and Kelsey went to a war museum, while Jenna, Rachel and I got back on the tube to go to Hyde Park. It was beautiful there today, the sun was out and the sky was a perfect blue. It was cold, but once my hood was up and gloves were on I was okay. In an attempt to save money, we took sandwiches, fruit and water with us in our purses for lunch, which worked out well because we found a bench and had a little picnic in the park. After lunch, we went in search of the Peter Pan statue that is there because both Jenna and Rachel have always wanted to see it. That was pretty much where our day ended, we took a walk from there back to a tube station near by to get to our flat. It was nice to have some time in the afternoon to relax and be able to write on here and everything.
Tomorrow we have class in the morning but then we are free for the weekend. I think we might go to Piccadilly Circus, which is kind of like the Times Square of London, and then maybe to Notting Hill on Saturday, we haven't completely decided yet. I can't believe it hasn't even been a week since I've arrived, I feel like I have been here for longer.
